Good story but stylistically not for me
The story was good, but the limited first person narrative made what was going on hard to follow at times. I appreciate the choice for what it was, since Ryo till felt like a fully formed character.

Absolutely incredible. Worldbuilding, character relationships, humour and sadness - the author pulls it all off brilliantly.
Minor complaints - I do wish that Neumeier had focused more on the flaws of the winter country's culture, as well as the struggles women face in a society with rigid gender roles. However, Ryo is a very idealistic nineteen-year-old boy, and since the books are from his POV I understand him being more uncritical.
Alll in all, a great book. Highly recommend if you enjoy interesting worldbuilding, exploration of cultural differences, and strong male friendships.

Enjoyable, if long, epic fantasy.
If I read more in this series, I hope the female characters will have more to do.

I picked this up, intending to just check out the first few pages to see where to place it on my tbr...and next thing I know, it's fifteen minutes to midnight and I've finished the whole thing!
If someone had tried to pitch the premise to me, I wouldn't have been interested - hence it taking me three years to pick up, despite being a long-time fan of Neumeier's. But Tuyo swallowed me whole. The *way* it was told, the characters and the twistiness of the plot, made a story that shouldn't have interested me completely entrancing. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series!

What an unexpected pleasure. Ryo is a very strong character, easy to like, and enjoyable to spend the whole book in his POV. I really enjoyed reading about these two cultures, especially the Ungaro. This book reminded me a bit of the world of Horizon: Zero Dawn - without all the robots.
