2 stars relates only to abridged audio book. Low quality recording as well.

My very first Elizabeth George mystery. I loved much of her early work but after awhile, she seemed to stop having her work edited. The books got too long and seemed too loose and sloppy. If you want a treat, read her first 5-6 novels and you'll see why she has so much talent.

I am rereading the Lynley series, and enjoying it. It's nice to read the next as I finish one instead of waiting for the new one to come out! This one features Deborah mourning a miscarriage (and there's a lot of angst about her guilt now about an abortion long ago that she has never told Simon about). Lynley, St. James, and Havers are investigating a murder connected to an upper-crust boarding school and there are the usual, obligatory false leads, wrong suspects, and concerns about social class. I was turned off by Deborah's prolonged agony but otherwise enjoyed the twists and turns.

Liked this much better than my first try at E. George, but I do have to say, I prefer my detectives to have less personal life. I don't really care what Inspector Lynley's love issues are, and for me, they just kind of get in the way of the story.

I like the Lynley series of George's books. This one moved much faster than the previous one thank goodness.

Unread shelf project 2021: book 6.

I love the Inspector Lynley series. It’s not just a series of murder mysteries/police procedurals, it’s an ongoing character-driven story where you see the relationships between Lynley, Havers, Deborah, St. James, Lady Helen, grow and shift and change as the years go by. That’s why I label this series as an “epic” — because each book builds on the last and there are ongoing subplots for those invested enough to read the series in the proper order.

Ugh, love these books so much!
