This is a good book about the dynamics of a family dealing with narcissistic personality disorder. However, if you’re looking for a suspenseful thriller this is not it. I found the first half of the book to be very slow but it definitely picked up towards the end.

One night Emma and Cass disappear. 3 years later Cass returns and Emma does not. The book is a story of finding out what happened. Told in dual narration by Cass and forensic psychologist Dr. Winter, the book looks at the dysfunctional family dynamic including Cass and Emma's relationship with their mother.

The book is the epitome of unreliable narrator which you know after reading the synopsis. This fact primed me to know that something wasn't right in the stories being told by Cass. However, as much as I tried, I could not predict what ultimately happened to the girls.

I am a fan of psychological mysteries and this story was right up my alley. Having a perspective from a forensic psychologist made the analysis into the family dynamic that much more intriguing. I think that this was a great idea on the writer's part.

If you like a good mystery and can handle an unreliable narrator, then this is the book for you!

Creeeeeeeepy! Some families are so messed up. Some people are so messed up. This book messes with you but it is worth the read. I saw the end coming but just didn't want it to go down like that.

Read it in two sittings because I couldn’t put it down! Good twists and turns and interesting incorporation of the narcissistic personality disorder in the mom. The end wasn’t fantastic but worth a read if you like this type of book. I can definitely see this becoming a movie!

Psychological thrillers are what I live for. Like the legend Hollaback Girl Gwen Stefani, I said "this my shit" when I picked up this book from the library. LITTLE did i know, this book was going to throw me into a cornfield with nothing to do but twiddle my thumbs.

I think the biggest problem I had with this book was the writing style. I absolutely h a t e when authors fail to show me what's happening and instead decide to tell me all of my emotions and thoughts. I didn't sign up for a case study fam. There were endless opportunities for the author to add dialogue, scenes, or actual plot to expain Cass and Emma's story. I didn't connect to the story at all and was deeply disappointed when I realized we were only going to hear Cass' story instead of live her story. And I caNNOT telllll you how annoyed I was whenever the author would repeat what she explained in the previous chapter or even 2-3 pages. I seriously felt like I was reading an essay where a student tried to boost their word count.

I don't understand why yall hype up a book just because it says psychological thriller and it takes 250 pages for the MC to make a point IM SICK.

Too much!! A psychological thriller needs to have a basis in the believable to make it really creepy and intriguing and the sheer amount of convoluted planning and weird, barely linkable events in this story meant that the links needed to be explained along the way rather than being subtly untangled by the reader as the plot is slowly unveiled and we 'discover' the hidden agenda.
The general storyline seemed solid but in the end I found it all too much!

Wow! One of the few mystery books I’ve read in the recent past where I didn’t see it coming! Such a great book!

5 Stars: Life-changing book, will read again
4 Stars: Great book, might re-read
3 Stars: Good book, won’t re-read
2 Stars: Ok book, took some effort to finish
1 Star: DNF

So I finished this book earlier this week and I am only just now getting around to writing the review.

My initial reaction after reading the book, I remember I had genuinely enjoyed the book, but I wasn’t blown away or caught off guard.

Currently, four days later, my reaction is... kind of blank? I remember bits and pieces but On the top of my head, I could only think of a few things that happened. To me, that’s not a great sign. I do remember that I had guessed the big reveal, which doesn’t bother me, it was a decent twist.

Spoiler alert below:
SpoilerI generally don’t enjoy books with an unreliable narrator. I’ve never been able to exactly pin point why, but it bothers me.

Overall, I’m going to trust my gut and stick with the four star rating. I have had a lot on my mind this week and I’ve been pulling long shifts at work.

Debated between a 3 and a 4 for this book. I found the author's writing/storytelling style a bit tiring. The book is almost entirely internal monologues by 2 characters and it can be exhausting for their stories to be told to you rather than shown. I feel like I didn't get a visual image of the story whatsoever, so while the plot was good, I didn't feel immersed in it. However, the plot really was quite riveting with lots of twists.
