3.5 stars. Quick, fun thriller read...didn't want to put it down. Great twist with much license to what would actually happen in real life. But still fun.
For the first third or so of this book I thought it was going to be just another "troubled girl goes missing/toxic female relationships" book. As it went on, I wasn't sure WHAT it was anymore. By the end I was pleasantly surprised. This book wasn't quite what I expected. It also had quite a few quotes and insights regarding familial relationships that I found worth highlighting.

This book wrecked me.
It also confused me. Why? Because I loved it.
There are SO MANY aspects to this story that would normally be problematic for me. The storytelling, for example. It bounced around from first person to third person to past tense to present tense. That usually calls for an automatic big fat NO. Oddly enough, I wasn't bothered by it. Another example is that fact that we are being TOLD of the emotional turmoil destroying this family, not experiencing it "firsthand." I think the reason that didn't matter to me is because I recognized a lot of the emotions, circumstances, and explanations as truth. So I connected to it still, if that makes sense.
Oh god, my thoughts are so jumbled when it comes to this book. It's driving me crazy! So I'll just say this, any book that can evoke such emotion from me is a win. I was so thoroughly engrossed in this story that I couldn't put it down. I recommend EMMA IN THE NIGHT as an exceptional psychological thriller with surprising twists and turns. A bit of a disclaimer though: I understand that this may not be everyone's cup of tea. It may not resonate with you that way it did with me and the jigsaw kinda storytelling might be a deal-breaker. As for me, I'll be adding this book to my favorites list.

My first phycological thriller I have ever read so I wasn't sure what to expect. This was a harrowing tale of sisterly love (very close to my heart), a fab detective drawing off her own experiences and twists that I wasn't expecting. It was hard to put down and I will deffo be continuing to read more thriller stories.
