I rarely get surprised by a book, and honestly, this one had me so confused I didn’t know where to even start forming guesses. This book explores a family with deep psychological issues, showing the darkness that can hide inside each of us if we aren’t willing to face the truth.

I really wanted to give this 5 stars because the story and the concept were fascinating. However, I found that it seemed disjointed, a few things didn’t quite get answered for me, and it was rushed to be finished. I love a thriller, but I love one where things are discovered rather than told to the reader. In this case, instead of having most of the questions answered through the plot, they were answered in an epilogue-type narration by the main character that left much to be desired.

The story was great. In general the writing was great. This would have been an easy 5 stars if Wendy Walker has taken an additional 30 pages to really answer some of the burning issues rather than use the cop out approach.

Meh. Meh meh meh. I had this book on my TBR for so.long. Then, it was just meh.

I was invested enough in finding out what happened, and didn’t really figure out the twist actually, that I finished it but I skimmed a lot of this book. I kind of felt like the author did a lot of research on narcissistic personality disorder and wanted to make sure we knew that, but i would have been more impressed if she had SHOWN that through character development and not through what felt like regurgitated facts.

Anyway, if you’re into super technical psychology with your mystery, I will say the twist was pretty good and kept me guessing.

this book took me too long to finish so i knocked off a star for that. also the incest was rlly bad so i knocked a star off for that it was just gross and then finally i knocked a star off bc i thought the ending was cheesy. but overall pretty good defs did not see the ending coming but also not in a good way ya know?

Took me a while to get into this one. To me, it just kept dragging on.

3.5-4 stars. This was much more of a psychological family situation than a full blown thriller. If that’s your thing, I highly recommend! If you’re hoping this is a murder mystery with all the creepiness to give you goosebumps, this isn’t it. I really enjoyed this one and it kept me entertained even in parts that were slower.

Probably more along the lines of 2.5 stars. Too much of it felt more like a family drama than a mystery/thriller which I wish I would of had a better base for from the beginning. I really didn’t think the storyline got good until the last 50 pages or so. The ending saved it from only being a 2 star rating.

A fast paced easy to read thriller

Cass and Emma went missing one night three years ago, now Cass is back desperate to find her sister. She tells of their imprisonment on a mysterious island and Emma is still trapped there. Dr Abby Winter and the FBI face a race against time to try and find her but is Cass telling the truth or is there more to the story?
Okay so this book has been languishing on my tbr pile for a while, I’ve read so many conflicting reviews I finally decided to read it for myself and see what happened.
I have to be honest I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this book. It’s very well written and quite clever but I feel it fell a bit short, for me anyway.

It’s told from two viewpoints, Cass’s and Dr Abby Winter’s. The start very slow going, I kind of kept waiting for something to happen, which unfortunately not much did, until about half way through the book, but that sense of ‘where is Emma?’ made me read until the end.

The characters, I found apart from Abby and sometimes Cass, were very unlikeable, especially Cass’s mother who suffers from something called Narcissistic Personality Disorder which made her constantly seek attention and neglect her children. Even Emma, from Cass’s stories wasn’t all that nice either.

It was also very heavy on the psychological aspect of Psychological Thriller, which although I found a bit interesting, I would have liked a bit more action or suspense.

Overall interesting in places but lacks real action or suspense.
