I picked up this book for a very low price at a book shop's clearance sale, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The story is a magical adventure with the modern world and Arthurian legend mixed together. The world itself is unique and well crafted with magic being an important part, but not the be all and end all of life. I was also pleasantly surprised with some of the dark aspects of the story and the gut punches that came with them.

The cover comments stress the romantic aspects and, while some people will enjoy them, I personally found them to be a bit clumsy, but not intrusive enough to be detrimental to the overall enjoyment of the story.

Overall, it's a pretty well-crafted fantasy adventure, with a story which I think a lot of people will enjoy and I would recommend it. I knocked off a few points from the score because it didn't quite absorb me as much as it could have and for a certain moment which I won't spoil, but that is just as case of my personal preference, and shouldn't get in the way of anyone else enjoying this book.

Alexandra Bracken did it again! I really really enjoyed this book, and it made me cry too!

Action packed, lore heavy, magic and wonder and pain and heartbreak. And my god do I want the next book already!

I loved all the characters, rightly hated some of them by the end too. Some of the lore did admittedly go over my head but it did nothing to deter me steamrolling through the majority of this book.

The characters where flat tropes, the world building sucks, half of the time i didn't know what was happening, and the author tries to make up for that fact that all of the names are confusing by putting a key in the back stating who each person is, to shirk from the responsabilities of actually writing a book that makes sense. It was super slow paced and I would not have read the entire thing if I didn't have to because of a book club. I read another book from this author and it was great, so maybe this is just a fluke, but I honestly am now a bit wary of any books by her. Definately do not recommend unless you like absolutely no depth to characters and confusing world building with a boring, just plain bad plot.

I wasn't totally sure what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. The ending had some sad stuff I didn't love, but I'll be reading the next.
