Really improved my mindset going into the new year. I can see that this wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but if you are really wanting change in your life and want to improve this is a really motivating book to help you do that.
I think there are a lot of great things about this book that are really motivating to help change your mindset, but I also feel like life doesn't have to always be about being as hard and as tough as you can be 24/7 like David Goggins seems to live his life. Most of us are just average people, not endurance athletes. That said, I did get some great advice to help me push through and persevere when things get tough, especially related to training. HIGHLY recommend the audiobook if you're going to read this, because there is a lot of great commentary between the narrator and David Goggins where they clarify a lot and have added discussion on top of the book itself. The narrator will read large chunks of the book, and then he and David will discuss it, almost podcast style. It makes it a really great listen!
Recommended by my brother John, the coolest sibling. I had a preconceived notion of David Goggins as batshit crazy and mentally ill before reading this book. I thought he was a bad influence that was breeding “toxic alpha males.”
He is batshit crazy and most certainly mentally ill, but his mission, as it turns out, has literally nothing to do with “toxic alpha males.” I was delighted and astounded to learn that Goggins points to several non-toxic alpha males as the “hardest motherfuckers” he’s ever met, including a wheelchair-bound ultraman athlete and the female woodlands firefighters he works with today. His story is about chasing self-improvement and running away from the comforts of society that make us soft and weak. He’s all about breaking the habit of giving up or quitting. He’s about realizing that our bodies and our minds are capable of so much more than we have been trained to believe.
He reminds me a lot of that photo of a firefighter carrying a mother and daughter through a flood-zone while their father trails weakly behind.
He reminds me of all the times my mind gave up on me before I reached my true potential.
I loved this way more than I thought I would. Good rec, John.

Going to listen to some Amelia Boone interviews to purge this toxic bullshit from my brain. This man needs some serious therapy.
