I think my book expectations were totally different than what the book was. By diaries, I assumed there would be paragraphs written about the day. Those were few and far between. There were so many abbreviations. I am surprised they published this. I ended up just skimming for Harry Potter references.

I am glad I read this book, it has opened my eyes to the person that Alan Rickman was.  I loved how honest his diary is, if he didn’t like something he wrote it in the diary.   Also loved the words from his partner Rima Horton.  He will always be Hans Gruber, Sheriff of Nottingham and Professor Snape to me but his acting career was so much bigger than those roles.

I ended up skipping ahead and skimming the rest (primarily the HP entries). I don’t know enough about his early career, the people involved, and British politics to really understand a lot of his entries. Unlike a biography, it doesn’t explain the context. You have to understand the context already, and I didn’t for anything except HP.

Definitely entertained by being in Alan Rickman’s head. A lover of food his craft. Astute and biting and catty. It was everything I was hoping for. Bonus interview with him at the end of the audiobook.

i believe this isn't why Alan wrote in his diary all these years or how he wanted it to be published.
i could imagine his toughts being told by him; how he might have wanted it to be--narrated by him, with his entonations and care.
it's heartbreaking to see how life ends, though--so suddenly. one minute you're worried about documenting everything; the next you are experiencing what life has for you.
