I continued to enjoy the semi-parodic video game high fantasy setting, especially juxtaposed against Davi's extremely modern sensibilities. The humor continues to rely heavily on a lot of IRL references, which I can see how people may not enjoy, but I thought was very funny.
The beginning of the plot was a little plodding as the story is setting up the chess pieces. But it did pick up, especially as the book got more into the central mystery of how and why Davi can keep respawning like a video game character.
I loved the new cast of characters, especially Johann the Himbo Ex-Boyfriend and his husband Matthias. I also liked Davi's character growth from being a video game character to becoming a real person, especially in her relationship with Tsav.
The actual resolution of the central mystery wasn't very satisfying, and I wish there was more fleshed out lore. I also wasn't a big fan of the villain and his motivations; it felt pretty overdone. But overall, I enjoyed the humor and the vibes.

  • Genre: Comedic fantasy
  • Series information: Book 2 of Dark Lord Davi duology. Completed duology.
  • Steam Level: 2 out of 5 (Closed door); FF romance
  • Romance Level: 3 out of 5 (Fantasy story with romance subplot)
  • How I Read It: Audiobook on Spotify premium and paperback borrowed from the library
  • Audiobook narration: Single American female narrator
  • Audiobook performance: 5 out of 5 (Enhances the reading experience) - The audiobook was so good that I ended mostly listening to it rather than reading it. The narrator really brought the humor to life and captured all the different characters really well. It felt like listening to an audio drama.

Great book, fun read, pacing is a tiny bit weird. Reading a Dark Lord Davi book is never going to be a chore.

As I was reaching the last hundred pages of this book, I was prepared to experienced a rushed, anticlimactic conclusion. After all the work that Davi has put into becoming the Dark Lord, I felt certain that not all the loose ends could be tied up so quickly. And I was sort of right.

I liked the twist with Cyrus, and the dragon, everything. But the ending all felt very convenient. It was what I imagined, mostly, but it happened a tiny bit too fast for me to feel satisfied by it.

I cant stress enough how much I enjoyed this book for what it is - but it just felt like a bit of a rush job. A hundred more pages might’ve been appropriate.
