If you think you want to read this book, read the first of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher books (The Last Wish) instead. I get it, you want to read about an emo monster hunter with a tragic backstory! Sure, we all do! And the Witcher books do that with lyrical prose, unforgettable characters, insight about the human condition, romance, humor, suspense, and merely a forgivable level of weirdness about women, none of which did I find in Empire of the Vampire.

I did not finish this book. I got nine hours in, was only 1/3 done, and decided I needed to stop doing this to myself and restarted The Last Wish instead.

I tepidly started this book... thinking I got duped into reading YA. I quickly was proven wrong.

The story centers around Gabriel de Leon as he retells his life story. While at times the writing feels like it's trying to be edgy, overall it rides the line of Grimmdark and hopefulness that makes both sides of that spectrum even stronger.

I just found it kinda too long and bleak, the female characters got so little time in the story and we're poorly fleshed out, the main character kept saying fuck and fucking so often it was kinda distracting and lame. Like I'm not offended by swearing, but it pulled me out of the fantasy space and felt like listening to a modern man whine.

this was a VERY fun read. exceptionally funny for being such an intense adventure. the world building here is unmatched and i loved learning the lore of this universe.

i’ll be honest though — every single animal death made me want to dnf this book so fucking bad.

Its a Vanhelsing type story. The delivery method is the main character describing his life to a scribe.
I wasn't too pulled in by the premise or setting and I don't prefer that delivery method.

Nothing wrong with the book. Just not my taste

This is an epic story, but I’m not a fan of period action and modern language mixed. I don’t mind cursing in books at all, but I like fantasy authors to bring in curses of their own beyond modern four letter words. The language is otherwise beautiful, the writing is dense. The story has plenty of action and suspense and excitement. If you like more classical heavier language you will give this book 5 stars. It’s not a speed read by any means. It’s a commitment. I gave this book 3 stars because I found myself skipping pages to cut to the chase. Kristoff’s writing is for fans of VE Schwab and Anne Rice. If you’re looking for a more Buffy vibe, keep looking. I do love the twist in the first act! This story is told as a condemned vampire hunter is forced to reveal his life story to one of the creatures he has hunted. Enjoy!
