I couldn’t put this book down. It (and Peace Talks before it) are such a fantastic combo for the Dresden Files series. Was not expecting some of the twists and turns, but was all in for the ride. The short story at the end was icing on the cake.

I think my good friend Petrik said it the best. This is basically Avengers Endgame is the Harry Dresden universe.

If that sounds appealing to you then you are going to like this book.

Just about everybody that you've ever heard of it seen in this world makes an appearance here. The book is pretty much balls to the walls from beginning to end. There isn't any down time. In fact, the "down time" that we get in the middle was a heavy duty lunch to the guy that made me have a theory as to why I think it took But her so long to get this book out.

There were epic moments. There were shocking moments. There were revelatory moments and there were moments that made me tear up. The book overall was really quite good.

My problems with the book are fairly small, but they are there regardless. With the battle sequences(s) there came a point that it was like the movie Man of Steel. And by that I mean they went on for a little bit to long. They were exciting and full of action, but anything goes on to long and you get a bit bored and complacent about it. My second problem, and probably my biggest (even though it might seem silly to some) was how many times Harry was like, "This is my CITY!" Or, "It's time to save this CITY!" I was like, dude, bro, I feel like I'm watching Arrow in the CW. "You have failed this city" pretty much became a meme and this book had to much of that in it. Especially at the end. It really pulled me out of the story.

Haha it probably sounds pretty whiny so, to reiterate, I did really like this book. I thought it was great and am SUPER excited for the next installment.

There are so many unanswered questions left. This was a fun series but I feel like Dresden is in many ways what an edge-lord would think is cool about a cowboy/wizard/PI.

And I’m just supposed to be okay after that??????

You know what it is to sell pieces of your soul so that someone who will never know your name will have another chance at life.

🌪️ Repetition: 2 pages in, and we’re already talking about Harry’s height again. We get it, he’s tall. Do we need to revisit this in every book? Think that could use repetition, is the events happened in side novellas that I wasn't aware of that were teased here.

🧿  Splitting Peace Talks and Battle Ground was, in my view, a misstep Battle Ground reads like the final 40 minutes of an Avengers movie: nonstop fight scenes strung together with little breathing room. While Butcher excels at writing action, an entire novel of battles quickly became exhausting, just as Peace Talks was bogged down by endless conversation. I did enjoy the Kraken sequence and the Black Vampire battle, but everything else could have been trimmed down.

🧨I don't think I've forgiven Butcher for handling everything about Murphy [and Harry]. Firstly, their relationship felt a little too late in the grand scheme of things. Additionally, after cooking for so long, their chemistry had completely dissipated. Lastly,
Murphy’s death, which should have been a pivotal, emotional turning point, felt oddly hollow, reduced to a minor beat instead of a moment that reshaped the narrative. The whiplash of her death being followed by Harry’s sudden engagement to Lara didn’t help.
Add in baffling choices, like Lara randomly being naked mid-fight or the narrative pausing to ogle a tattoo on Molly during battle, and it all felt oddly tone-deaf.

🤺 Overall, too many plot points seem to have drifted off-course. Threads that once carried weight now feel rushed, mishandled, or forgotten. For a series that once balanced humor, mystery, and action so deftly, Battle Ground was an exhausting entry that left me more frustrated than satisfied.  After slogging through Peace Talks and this, I’m honestly unsure if I’ll continue the series.

A good entry that delivers nonstop action on an epic scale. At times it feels a little over the top, and Murphy’s death comes across as frustratingly abrupt, but the book still hits hard and keeps the tension high throughout.
