This book is extremely confusing 😂
In the interest of giving a non-spoiler review, I will say this: as feminist as the concept may sound, I promise it’s even more feminist than you thought. However, I don’t fully understand the point so it’s probably not as effective as it might be. The writing was impeccable, the characters spectacular, and the setting pretty funny I must say.
I enjoyed the read and hope to read more of Pratchett’s work in the future, though I will be doing more research on which ones in particular to read next in the hopes that I’ll get a coherent story.
I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a distinctly quirky and comedic book.

I'm just going to copy and paste my review from Shelfari. If I read it again, I may have a different position, but this was my reaction right after finishing it:
"For a book, this was pretty good, pretty funny. For a Discworld novel, for a Terry Pratchett novel, I found it very disappointing. Probably because I had very different expectations of the novel. From the outset, it seemed like the war being fought was for pretty vague reasons that not many people remembered. They bring this up some other times in the novel but it's not really the main point. What I got out of it was it doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl, both sexes are just as capable of doing incredibly pointless violent things for stupid reasons. I think Equal Rites made a better case for, um, equal rights."

Before I started reading the book, I caught the flu. There wasn't much I could do but sleep. At some point I hit around 20 hours mark and when I woke up, i was alert and bored. My brain wasn't functional enough to watch television but I needed to do something.
This book was available and I consumed it. During this time I had nostalgia of being a child on a sick day. I had a blast reading. The prose was very easy to digest for a sick person.
The content is laugh out loud funny at times. Pratchett crafted an interesting world.

Loved, loved, LOVED this book! Definitely in the running for my favorite Pratchett novel. I only wish there were a second one so I could stay with these characters longer!
As much as I WANT to like Terry Prachett, and as much as I enjoy aspects of his books, I can't seem to get into Discworld.
Of the few books that I've read, I did enjoy this one the most, despite the bleak view of war, men, and the place of women.

This book is so fun! It's dense in the way that most fantasy novels are, but even without having read the rest of this series, this book was easy to get into and follow. This is an adventurous novel about a small group of underdogs hoping to do good (one of my favourite tropes). However, they aren't being told the whole truth by their superiors, and each of them has a secret of their own to hide. I really don't want to spoil anything but if you like fantasy, witty social commentary, and a spunky girl protagonist, you should really consider giving this a read.
Pratchett writes young female narrators better than almost any other male author I can think of. He's able to make me forget that I'm reading a girl being written by a man; I'm just inside Polly's head. It's phenomenal.
I can't tell you the best thing about this book because that would spoil it. Suffice to say that it's engaging, amusing, and thought-provoking. "Amusing" really isn't strong enough. It made me snort out loud on public transportation.
Deeply enjoyable, and probably worth many rereads.
