March 2024 : yup, still got it
March 2023 : it is once again the time where i re read Monstrous Regiment.
Update : I am once again immensely pleased with this book.
I think this is the one. My favourite. Peak Pratchett-ness. Talking about serious matters with a funny coating. Characters that are both realistic and larger than life. A story that isnt complicated but deeply efficient and that keeps you turning the pages. Plot arcs that are inevitable and others that take you full on by surprise. Quotable material left and right. Good villains. Better heroes.
I cannot even begin to express how much i love that book and how I wished I had read it sooner.

This was my first introduction to the Discworld series, and I liked it - not enough to obsessively read the rest of the books, but I wouldn't mind reading more of the series if, say, Book #1 fell into my lap. Monstrous Regiment was funny and poignant, and though I'm that kind of person who really needs to start with the first book and work her way through a series, it was successful as a stand-alone novel.
My one complaint is the layout, and it was a big deal for me. Overall, the story read quickly, but the lack of chapter breaks was painful and made it really difficult to get into the book. If I hadn't been reading it for Book Club, I probably would have abandoned MR early on. My edition had almost zero white space - a single line between sections was all I got to break up the 457-page narrative. I'm so glad it's over, and I hate feeling that way about a book (especially a pretty good book at that).

Another book that didn't need to be 500 pages...
I love Pratchett's writing though, and his not-so-subtle-but-subtle-enough social commentary. As the blurb says, "the best man for the job may be a woman," and I loved the ongoing reveals vs. one big one all at once.
