ahhh i always enjoy every one of claire north's books i've read. she tells the most exciting, most interesting stories.

Another extraordinary book by Claire North. A surprising, entertaining thriller with a touch of Black Mirror.
fast-paced

I wanted to love this book. I really, really did. I loved Claire North's first two offerings (under this name) and was very excited about this one. However I just could not get into it. I still haven't been able to finish it and I started it months ago. I love the premise and find what it says about perfection to be fascinating, but I just have so much trouble remaining interested in the book. I'm not even sure why. I may try to come back to it eventually, but for now I think it's just time to move on.

4.5

Ugh, Claire North is just too good

I loved most of it, but the ending was kind of anti-climactic. It was slow and I didn't feel like all my questions were answered. Left feeling vaguely dissatisfied.

I loved the premise for this story. Hope is around sixteen when people start to forget her - unless face-to-face with someone, her friends, teachers and even her parents simply don't remember that she ever existed, and every interaction with someone is like her first meeting with them. This makes it impossible for her to finish school, get a job, have stable accommodation, or even order a meal in a restaurant, and so she turns to theft and finds she is very suited and successful at it. It also makes her incredibly lonely and uncertain of her worth as a person. She finds purpose in trying to bring down the people behind an app called Perfection, which encourages people to become superficially 'perfect' mindless clones, and races all over the world trying to both track them down and escape from them. The writing is excellent, with elements of poetry, suspense, philosophy, fast action, and a really original, deep and well thought out story, and I found especially the first two-thirds of the book very hard to put down. It slowed towards the end, with an ending I was a little disappointed with, but overall a book I loved reading and definitely recommend.

Terrific. Even better than The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, something I hadn't imagined possible. What a great writer!
