Probably more of a 2.5 - and interesting concept, and north is a great writer, but it's like twice the length it needs to be.
Has some themes I really like, and a really nice writing style... but I didn't have fun reading it or feel particularly changed/moved at the end, so a middling grade. Still a decent quality book though.
Also, and that's not really to my taste.
Also,
Spoiler
literally every character has an unhappy ending
A really interesting concept, written in an engaging way. I did feel that about 100 pages could have been cut especially some of the Wikipedia paragraphs.
Got to chapter 9, but keep picking it up and putting it down because bored
I really wanted to love this book, and I thought the premise would be so interesting! The beginning of the book was fair enough, but then it just got worse and worse as it went on. The plot was predominantly about an app called 'Perfection' that Hope seeks to destroy. It was not, as I had thought, about her condition upon which she is not remembered by anyone.
The characters were uninspiring, I couldn't find myself to like let alone care about any of them. If that wasn't enough to make me disinterested, the writing was terrible; choppy, confused, bland, and boring. If I had to read 'macarena' or 'fuckity fuck fuck' one more time... save yourself, and don't read this book. Thank god it's finally over.

Man patika.
Intriguing concept - lost direction halfway through
The idea of not being remembered is brilliant, so much of our identity is linked to memory, our own and others, so who are we without that.
Hope lives a life of here and NOW stealing to survive and out of boredom, without the ability to form relations with other people, who doesn’t remember her.
During an heist to steal a diamond, she encounters the company perfection, which is Facebook+google in an extreme future version, a young girl, which Hope had sympathy for, kills herself unable to meet the high beauty ideals in Perfection.
So when Perfection starts to chase her because of the diamond theft she strikes back at them.
It’s like this novel wants too many things at the same time, the “invisible man concept” of not being remembered, the extreme Perfection app with brainwash right out of “a clockwork orange”, the techno thriller with dark net communication all wrapped into a 1. Person narration mixed with strange infodumps and flashbacks.

2023 Review
The Sudden Appearance of Hope is definitely a story that stays with you, but man oh man, is it longgggggggg. Since the first time I read it, I have given it another star. Claire North is a superb writer of fine details. But there were around 100 or so pages I grew bored and needed to read something else to distract myself. The synopsis also does not give you enough details about this expansive book. From the hardcover, readers know that Hope is forgotten by all and that her life is dangerous. Not that she steals the programming of a worldwide program called "perfection" and aids another woman in destroying said program while killing people. Finding information on the program, the people who use the program, and the program's creators is the primary basis of this story. At times there is much action and at times the story is dull. There are many places throughout the story where Hope recalls events of her past that I am not sure help progress the plot of the novel; more like useless filler.
Overall The Sudden Appearance of Hope is good, but much too detailed for me.

This book wasn't as great as I expected it to be. The plot was meh and there wasn't too much action. Not to mention it seemed I had read so much in two days but in reality, I only read 90 pages instead of 150 or 200. It wasn't too difficult to get into but it seemed to drag on and I was getting quite bored with it. I felt like I should really like this book, but the truth is that I don't and I'm basically over it. Yes, the characters were very cool but at some points in the book I couldn't help but feel confused because in a way the characters are somewhat odd. I'm also not sure if I would recommend this book to anyone.
