This was a disappointing read and the only reason I finished it through until the end was because it was short. The story is poorly written and highly repetitive. I believe if the Author read through the story before publishing they may have seen just how many times one character sighs on one page or phrases are repeated and had a chance to fix it.

The MC is just so boring and uninteresting. I could not have cared less if they killed her off and she was the MAIN CHARACTER !! The love interest also felt so forced? I do not think they had any chemistry and were in fact just horny teenagers desperate for some physical contact with another teenager.

Also the "who dunnit" was SOOO OBVIOUS!! . I was rolling my eyes just thinking how every character could miss something pretty much laid out before the reader pointing with flashing signs...it made the reveal frustrating, drawn out, and not at all surprising.

Also
Spoiler why does an old man even leave his whole life's work and legacy TO A LITERAL TEENAGER WHO ACTS LIKE A TEENAGER AND HAS NEVER HAD AN OUNCE OF RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE IN THEIR LIVES?! The adults in her life set her up to fail.

This book truly is a "Knives Out" meets "The Inheritance Games" and it is done really well. The added bit of magic in the story is so fun!
The characters are well written and the story was done really well. The mystery unfolded very nicely. I will say that it felt unrealistic that the law enforcement wasn't very involved in solving the murder. Especially since the main characters were suspects #1 and #2 at the start of the story.
The ending was a bit confusing at first, but it played out really nicely. I'd be interested to see more in this story.

What an incredibly fun magical murder mystery!

I really liked the voicing and pacing of this novel, and that it's a low fantasy side by side with mundane society -- like you can elect to take occult classes. I wasn't sure in the very beginning if this was going to be a YA that was too young for me, but I found it really entertaining. There were not any parts that dragged out and plot were great, and it was twisty and full of surprises. I liked Tabatha very much as a main character, and I thought a lot of the familial struggles were really relatable.

Thank you so much Penguin Teen and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review! I really enjoyed it.

A mix of fantasy, magic and mystery. Quite a captivating story, with plot twists I didn't see coming. I liked the characters and their relationships. I enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this book for multiple reasons. The writing style, implying it was being told directly to someone through the events of Tabatha’s experience was really engaging from the beginning. I liked the casual mix of the fantasy element into a modern setting, this was the smoothest urban fantasy I have read in a while. The magic was also interesting but under explained, and the characters were enjoyable but underdeveloped. But that ending, literally the last page, dropped it a whole star. I love ambiguous endings, but in this case, because of the mystery at the heart of the plot, this ending was maddening.
