Thank you to Andrea Tang, NetGalley, and Penguin Group for an eARC of These Deadly Prophecies!
I really enjoyed this book! It felt like a fantastical version of Truly Devious and The Inheritance Games.
Things I loved:
The overall plot - A sorcerer dies mysteriously and his apprentice and child have to figure out who killed him before either of them gets charged with his murder. High stakes, but fast-paced and fun!
The diversity - I liked reading about a hero who wasn't a young white girl. The author subtly mentions her Asian culture and I liked hearing a different perspective about how parent's from another culture would handle a situation like this.
The silly banter - Callum and Tabath are adorable. Tabatha is a smart girl, determined not to be swayed by the easy-going jock. But we all know what happens when these two are forced to stick together! Their witty conversations, flirting, and general awkwardness had me laughing.
I like reading Young Adult novels because they are faster paced, easier reads and generally great palette cleansers that can clear your head and ready you for another heavier book. This book definitely succeeded in this task. 4/5 stars.

I actually enjoyed this book more than I was expecting to! I did think it was just a wee bit boring in the beginning, there wasn't enough action for me, I like a good fast-paced book, the climax of the book wasn't until the last like 20 pages, so the entire exposition of the story felt dragged on to me. That being said, I did think the characters had good dynamics with each other and that's always a major green flag (major plus) for me! It was a quick read and was a great switch up from reading a heavy romance.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group for letting me read an advanced digital copy!

"I can admit to myself now - remembering what it felt like to sit in his car and see the cautious hope in his gaze - that in that moment, I really did hesitate. Looking at him, with those big blue eyes looking right back at me, I'd have called him guileless. I'd have called him soft. I'd have called him innocent."
So many glaring plot holes & inconsistencies, and the magic system was poorly defined. The narrator was good though.

This book was sent to my by the publisher as an archive paperback. I really enjoyed the book it had great pacing. Loved the fmc and how strong she was but not to the point that she knew when she needed help. It was the perfect mix of magic and murder mystery. Great light read to end the year with.
This was a quick, fun, and enjoyable read that had all the Knives Out vibes I was looking for when I read The Inheritance Game but didn't get.
medium-paced
