Title: Experimental Magic (Myrtlewood Mysteries 2)
Author: Iris Beaglehole

Rating: 2.5/5 (round up to 3 for review purposes)

Pages: 302

This book is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Another quick read from Iris beaglehole. Joining Rosemary and Agatha in their chaotic family.

Like some reviews have said, it has a gilmore girls feeling with Magic. I think it sums it up. The relationship is messy and sometimes frustrating. Gran is unhelpful, and I'm unsure of her contribution to the story.

The story didn't go anywhere, really. It was incredibly waffley, and I think the author gets too over excited with how she wishes to convey her ideas that sometimes the dialogue jumbles over each other.

However, I really do like the concept. The characters are interesting. I love the town. I'm still intrigued enough to continue with the series to see where the thorne family goes next.

The best that can be said about this series is a direct quote from the book: "She was almost totally clueless." I regret picking up the second book after rating the first 2 stars, based on curiosity about Dain, a character who does not really feature in the first book at all.

I’m really enjoying the Myrtlewood Mysteries series so far and I’m definitely planning to continue reading. However, I don’t think I enjoyed Experimental Magic as much as I did the first instalment. I’ve always been a fan of first instalments as I like meeting the characters and discovering the world they live in.

I think my main issue with this instalment was Athena. Her mood was all over the place and I get that she’s a teenager, but the way she talks to Rosemary sometimes is horrible. I understand that she’s frustrated because she doesn’t seem to have powers (yet) but it did get a bit ridiculous sometimes. I can definitely see the Gilmore Girls inspiration as she does remind me a lot of Rory and we all know how bad her character went down the toilet.

Talking of the Gilmore Girls inspiration, Rosemary really is like Lorelai. She has the same rambling nature and she does seem effortlessly funny sometimes. I wouldn’t say she’s as charming as Lorelai but I do see the similarities.

I love how much more we learn about the magical world in this instalment. Creatures like werewolves and the fae weren’t mentioned in the first book and I had no idea they would be playing a part in this story. I’m not going to give any spoilers, but the inclusion of these are very imperative to what’s going on and there’s a really interesting surprise about a character’s heritage.

The cosy vibes are there once again and while I’m not a huge fan of cosy mysteries (I think I need to read more of them) I am enjoying this series. Is it the best series ever written? No, but it does have an interesting story and I like how quickly I can read each book.

2.5. Slightly less charming than #1 and a weird unresolved ending. Where the heck do all those kids end up?

Another fun romp through Myrtlewood with Rosemary and Athena. Although most of the events are fairly predictable, it’s an entertaining story.

The second book in the Myrtlewood series, returns to the village and introduces the readers to the alternate world of fae when a child disappears and Athena learns that she is half-fae. When Athena crosses over to the fae world, Rosemary becomes very agitated and, along with Athena's friends, decide to cross over to find her. Athena, her father and the kidnapped children are rescued and all seems well - maybe.

Rosemary is still a very irritating character in this series and the story meanders quite badly in spots. Nevertheless, it is a fun adventure.

Fun and interesting

Another magic house and powers a woman didn't know she had...but I'm glad I stuck with it. certainly a teen book, but I like those as well...maybe more"drama" than seems realist but at least not excruciating sex details..lol

I was so excited to get the second one of this series because I absolutely loved the first one. Rosemary and Athena are such a fun mother-daughter duo both trying to find their way in this new landscape of magic and mystery. In this latest, there is a disturbing disappearance that isn’t the first that the village has experienced, and Rosemary and Athena do their best to find out what’s going on. They find out that there is a close relationship to them at play, and there are a couple of reveals and secrets that are so surprising. Well-written and fun, I’m off to start the next one. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
