This book really kept my attention. I think that the story could have included a little more about Mirielle’s life before her diagnosis. I also think that Miriele showed a startling lack of growth until her he near end of the book. But the book depicted depression and stigma very well. I enjoyed the book and I learned something from having read it.

Such a good, yet heartbreaking book. Really makes your heart go out to those that suffered during this time. Highly recommend.

I didn’t know much about this historical topic and really liked learning more. I found Mirielle very entitled and annoying at times, but appreciated how she reacted in very “real” ways to the hurdles thrown her way. I loved Irene and Jean and loved the relationships Mirielle built with them.

Rounded up from 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the story overall, but it didn't always keep my attention. I thought the main character came off as entitled and whiney at times.

I really enjoyed this book and the story with it. This book follows the story of Mirielle, a woman from glamorous California and is forced to Louisiana after being diagnosed with leprosy.

This book had shown me a side of history that I was unaware of. I could have gone my whole life not knowing about Lepars homes and institutions. This fictional story about historical topic is insightful!

This book tells the heartbreaking tale of a leper colony in the early 1900s, and the way the disease wrecked people and families. The story has depth and emotion, clearly written with fact and research. While not necessarily a bad thing, I did find it to be a slow read and just took me a long time to get through. However, the epilogue was my favorite part!
