Ok, I went into this blind. For some reason I thought this had a paranormal element? The beginning felt sufficiently creepy too, which suits the introduction. So that had me confused for the first third. After I figured out this was a historical fiction it began to make more sense. I knew literally nothing about leprosy or how they were treated in America before reading this. It was a very touching story to read. I loved Jean and Frank. Mirielle was very human which made me like her. She had very normal responses to things. I like that we end up with a sort of happy ending. Historical fiction will never be a high rating for me anymore but I enjoyed reading this and I learned a lot. 3.7
