I always like learning about lesser known aspects of history, and this was an interesting insight into the Carville hospital for leprosy in Louisiana in the 1930s and decades before and after. The main character, Mirielle, is forced against her will to travel to Carville, which is a massive departure from her identity as a lush on the Los Angeles movie scene, her husband a big director. It's a mystery for a while that he son has died tragically. At Carville, she pines for home, even though she was broken there, and she struggles to deal with the immensity of having leprosy and being stuck. She opens up to her housemates, and there are important characters in the young girl Jean and the lovely Frank. Not amazing literature, but still a good book.

This book was informative and thought-provoking. I had never thought about leprosy and those who had to live through it. What a tragic life for so many.

I found the pace slow, crawling at times. There were redeeming characters and storylines, however, and they kept me reading. As did the narrator. She kept me in it, thank goodness.

I didn’t know much about the leper colony before this book, or what it was like for them. This book was informative, well written, and a pleasure to read. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it!

What a great book to end the year! This historical fiction novel brings to light the sad truth of what many leprosy patients experienced. The story immediately tugged at the heartstrings when introducing the main character, Mirielle West, and her diagnosis of leprosy. From there begins her journey into her “new” life. Recommended by my twin sister who received an ARC of the book, I was not disappointed. Amanda Skenandore https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/9073938-amanda-skenandore
