I fell down the critical role rabbit hole last year and I fell hard. Still not knowing just how deep the rabbit hole goes. I was first exposed to Critical role through the animated Legend of Vox Machina show, then started the podcast, and finally discovering the comics. I only know campaign 1, Vox Machina, and this definitely feels right at home with all the other mediums the story has taken. Being an origins story, the book shows how Vox Machina came together and despite knowing how it ends (the origins to the current storyline) it still manages to throw some curve balls that keep you guessing. At first it seems the story is tweaking things with the timeline of how and when characters met but it actually all still checks out from what I can remember. Complaints; these are small nitpicks and may not bother you at all, the art style; simplistic yet beautiful. Being more familiar with the show (also the only visual medium) I tend to think of the characters all looking like that. And while this isn't a 1:1 replica the characters all still look and feel like their animated show/podcast campaign counterparts. I think the faces are all a little long. The art isn't the best I've ever seen but it definitely does a great job. Secondly, this is based off a Dungeons and Dragons campaign so depending how you feel about it you might not mind but there is some 4th wall breaking going on here, with maps and a large part of Scanlan's humor just being 4th wall breaks which didn't work for me at all. Luckily it doesn't overstay it's welcome. All in all I had a blast and can't wait for the next volume of the comics, the next season of the show, campaign 2 of the podcast, and the prose novels set in the Critical Role universe. Highly recommend, even if you know nothing about CR, this is an origins so you can start here then check out the show. (Animated or podcast)

I assume as the series goes on characters will start to look more like we know them, Pike'd hair will change and if there's a backstory to Vex's feather?

I couldn’t put it down from the moment I got it. Finished it in a few hours because it was so good. This is probably my favorite comic I’ve ever read. The art style is amazing and the way the story line was written is phenomenal. Love reading about Vox Machina’s origins, just as good as the show, if not better.
