Harriet The Spy

This was on my bucket list of books to read and I was disappointed quite honestly. I read this aloud to my girls and I kept having to stop and have conversations about how we treat our friends and other adults. I did not feel Harriet was in any way relatable aside from her relationship with Ole Golly. I found it very disheartening when Ole Golly got married and that evidently meant Harriet was never to see or hear from her again. When Harriet was going through all her troubles that would have been the most opportune time for Harriet to write letters back and forth to Ole Golly or even for Ole Golly to come back into town unexpectedly because she missed her former charge so much. Even though Harriet had parents and teachers it seemed like she didn't have anyone in the world. It made me quite sad. I was very relieved and unsatisfied once the book was finished.

I remembered that I loved this book when I was a kid, but remembered very little of the details. The spying parts were still great, but Harriet is a bit mean spirited and I’m not sure she entirely redeems herself.

This was one of my favourites as a young girl, aspiring to be an author (just like Harriet) and be a spy on the side, of course. Harriet is one of those lovely endearing characters that jumps off the page and sticks to your young, childhood self as they transition from child to young adult. Bravo, Louis F! This one's a good nugget.

Harrier is an unloveable character. I tried to take into account that her social skills were behind her peers. It also doesn’t help that I remember living the movie…But I was 5 so my taste has changed since then.
