It doesn’t hold up so well, but what does? Read it to my son and he enjoyed it.

I had to read this for a childrens lit class so let’s get to it.

I don’t understand how this is a popular childrens lit book? As a neurodivergent person I’m taking the people defending this book as largely offensive lmao.

This is a girl who find joy in other peoples pain, has no empathy and doesn’t learn it (shallow apologies), mistreats her family, and end up physically abusing some of her classmates.

This book had no redeeming qualities for me. Had she learnt her lesson and apologized truly to those she hurt, my rating would be completely different. If we had gotten more proof on page that maybe she is just neurodivergent and not malevolent for the sake of it, that would also be a different story.

As it stands, this was painful to read

I love Harriet. I love Janie. I love Sport. They aren’t finks. I love this book.

Harriet is absolutely the worst. The story is still delightful as an adult, though.

What an odd, somewhat frightening character Harriet M. Welsch is! This book is fascinating as a character study of Harriet alone, but also an interesting view of children’s publishing in the 60s. I laughed out loud more than once at Harriet’s clever, but cruel, observations, and thoroughly enjoyed this short read.
