After: I'm so glad I read this before the last. It was so interesting to get inside Ali's head and see things from her point of view.
Before: I decided to go ahead and read this one before the last, so I checked it out at the library. I'm kind of annoyed I don't own it, since I just bought all the rest of them. Oh well, I can always get it later.
Spoiler
I felt bad for Courtney!! She wasn't the crazy one after all, it was real Ali! And she may have liked Emily back. :(Before: I decided to go ahead and read this one before the last, so I checked it out at the library. 4.5 stars!
This PLL prequel does a fantastic job of setting up the series. Getting to read about the main characters seventh grade year makes the rest of the series better and makes it easier for the reader to track the mystery from the beginning. I also greatly appreciate how careful this book was about getting every detail right; I feel like theres a lot of prequels where no ones fact checking anything and this was thankfully one where every single detail matches perfectly with what is said in later books.

This was an interesting prequel to the main series. Ali and Courtney's differences in personality and motivation were good to know before going into the main books, and seeing the main four liars as younger kids was also cool to see. They're young teens in this one, so a lot of the stakes aren't as high (like a character getting kissed or having a crush is focused on) but the relationship between Ali and the girls is still interesting, especially when the reader can see why she is so manipulative.
I did forget that this ends with a mysterious "ooh, who is that?" section, which is a bit frustrating but will make me keep reading.

i would recommend reading this book after the seventh one! or just read it last, like a final reveal.
One of my favorites in the series. Where did it all begin? Why is Ali such a B? Was real Ali really crazy? All the answers are here!

this book should not be listed as a prequel to ALL of the books. the first page gives away a HUGE secret and i'd feel bad for the unsuspecting reader who thinks this is the first book they should read. it would ruin the whole entire series.

Deep dive to background story of the "Alison" we known during whole Pretty Little Liars plotline and the mysteries surrounding her "murder"
Must say as cheesy this is, I really enjoying the Pretty Little Liars and the mysteries!
