Wow, that was fairly terrible. I remember reading one of Heyer's romances some time back and thought it was pretty fun, but this was just bad. The characters were supposed to be quirky, I guess, but mostly they were just annoying, awful people, and who dunnit was painfully obvious fairly early on. In fact, the killer was so obvious, I spent a bit of time trying to figure out how it could've been someone else, as, surely, it couldn't be that obvious. But, no, it was.
It also suffered badly from love, or at least getting engaged, sucking all of the personality out of one character. Also all of the strength. (Moral of the story: never get engaged?)
Also the killer's plan made little to no sense, and I'm not sure why, when he had an American accent, he had a fake company involving his real country of origin. Surely, it would've been safer to make up an American country?

For the first couple chapters the large cast of characters is rather hard to keep track of. I think it needed to be introduced a little more carefully. Once I got them straight, Heyer's usual skill at creating unique, eccentric personalities shines. Poor Terrible Timothy was the comic relief, and he was in turns endearing and annoying, as she'd intended, but this wasn't one of her funnier books.
This book also didn't drawn me in very well. I think it's because no one is very likeable, I didn't feel very invested at all. I wish Patricia had a bit more warmth or something. It just lacked that spark to catch my interest. It was a classic country house mystery, with a family of difficult people, plenty of drama, and everyone being suspicious. All the different characters with their unique personalities makes it a little more layered.
I was utterly in the dark as to who it could be. In the end the culprit was very obvious, and I had discounted him/her because of that. So I wasn't particularly impressed with the reveal. It was all right, but nothing special.
The romance is the most perfunctory yet for Heyer, it's even less the focus than usual.
I know I'm really damning the with faint praise. The truth is it's a decent book, it's well written, great characterisation, and if you're after this style of mystery it fits the bill. It was good, it just didn't seem to really click for me right now, and I'm aware I'm in a difficult mood, so part of that is on me. The rest of it is that this just isn't the best mystery that Heyer has written.

I'd put this as a solid 3 stars. I think the plot was a little too farfetched for me, and the romance wasn't nearly as interesting as it might've been.
Charming mystery in the Christie style. It was hard at first to keep track of the characters. I am sure she has better efforts.
It is my first Georgette Heyer's book and the plot and even the characters reminds me of Agatha Christie's stories. Silas Kane is missing only to find him later death. Who was it? Lots of suspects and Superintendent Hannasyde is going to tell us which one was it. I really enjoyed the book and I will continue the series.
I'm a fan of Georgette Heyer but I think I missed some of her mysteries this one included.
I like the Golden Age feeling in this book, the likable cast of characters and the plot.
The mystery was very good and it kept me guessing till the end.
It was en engaging and entertaining read and I'm happy I still have Heyer mysteries to read.

Another excellent country-house murder from Heyer. Once again a number of (frequently unpleasant) people are gathered together and in a position to both murder and profit from the death of the various victims. Lots of good period details and another amusing protagonist in Miss Allison.
Not Heyer's best mystery but IMMENSELY entertaining thanks to its fantastic cast of characters.
The real shame is that the sensible-practical young woman character had a great chance of being the real murderer but didn't turn out to be. I thought she might be the Australian relative due to inherit if the third heir were successfully murdered. She had access to push the first person off a cliff (after all, she lived with him, she knew his walk routine, and he wouldn't have suspected her until it was too late), then she established an alibi for the second murder by being in the hall with witnesses when the firecracker faked the gunshot, and she was always conveniently present whenever one Jim's vehicles showed signs of sabotage. So... yes, part of me was hoping Heyer would pull a fast one and make her the hidden villain.
