Still my second favorite Riordan series. The gods are pretty useless and are really cartoony. However, the found family of Magnus, his friends, and his floormates makes this series really enjoyable. Also, the diversity of this series is amazing. A deaf character, a Muslim character, and a genderfluid / transgender character, which are all handled with grace and understanding.

Even death has not brought Magnus peace because now he and his friends have to stop Loki's plans to make it so Sam doesn't have to marry a giant, Thor gets his hammer back, and the end of the world can be put on delay.

I can't believe I'm giving this one four stars after giving the previous book two, but here we are. Magnus still sounds too much like Percy, but this was a vast improvement overall from the prior novel. Magnus can finally speak ASL fluently! Alex as a whole is a fantastic and kickass character and I hope to see more of her/him in the future. I'm very excited that the kids reading this book get to see a canon genderfluid character in a novel that isn't about gender. Sam, as usual, still deserves to be the main character, but I would settle for she and Alex together as protagonists. Sorry Magnus, it's not you; it's that you're just not nearly as interesting as your friends. I hate to admit this, but I'm definitely looking forward to book three now.
