This book made some good points, and gave some thought provoking questions. However, the theology was incredibly basic and watered down. Don't read if you are looking for something intellectually stimulating.
A few nuggets from this book are shared below;
You'll never know that God is all you need until God is all you've got.
The battle for sin is won or lost in your mind. Whatever gets your attention will get you.
Service is the pathway to real significance.
God never wastes anything. He would not give you abilities, interests, talents, gifts, personality and life experiences unless he intended to use them for his glory.
Great opportunities always disguise themselves in small tasks.
You can retire from your career, but you will never retire from serving God.
May we all live lives that are worthy of examples

Rick Warren’s book is about finding purpose through Jesus Christ. He focuses on explaining how we are on earth as God’s creation here for his service as well as to be lights for Christ to others while living on this planet. He talks about living for eternity and not for the temporary. He discusses surrendering your life to God, and the steps to becoming a Christian. He dives in deeper, talking to us about our five purposes for being on this earth: to put Christ at our CENTER, and to mold our CHARACTER to be like Christ, to CONTRIBUTE and serve the world around us, to COMMUNICATE our own personal testimonies and life lessons from God, and to finally have a COMMUNITY of believers at a church where we can fellowship and worship God.
CONS
As a follower of Christ my entire life, certain point can seem basic and very repetitive in the beginning few chapters. I think this is because he is trying to really drive his points home for those reading who may be new to Christianity and may be just starting out on their walk with God. I do not agree with several of his personal beliefs and how he states them in this book as facts. That is deceptive to new Christians who won’t know better. I encourage new Christians to not take his views on baptism to fact, and to read the Bible for themselves. Baptism is not just a statement of your faith for others. Baptism is not just a symbol of Christ’s death. Baptism is the moment in which we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This was the only major point I disagreed with. Most all other points I really enjoyed reading his ideas.
PROS
The chapters are very short daily devotionals that don’t take much time. Warren does this because, as discussed in the book as well, he believes in the power of reflecting on what we read, hear, and learn in order to actually be able to apply it to our lives. He does a great job outlining and organizing the book, chapters, and individual thoughts throughout the book.
I liked how Warren discusses the idea of “surrendering” to God. He talks about how this is very difficult for human beings because we are naturally selfish, wanting to hold onto control and pride.
Another big take-away from this book was about temptations. The worst thing you can do is continuously remind yourself “don’t eat the cookie” over and over again. Dwelling on a temptation only makes it harder for us to say no because we are constantly thinking about it. Warren says the best way to overcome a weakness is by distracting our minds away from that particular temptation. He encourages us to focus always on God; thus, making it harder to fall into temptation and easier to become more like Christ.
Warren discusses how we should love who God created us to be, accordingly with our person based on personality and abilities. He discusses how God is the potter and we are the clay. God knit us in the womb and had already written our lives in the book of life before we were born; therefore, when we hate any part of who we are or wish to completely alter God’s creation, we are pretty much saying God makes mistakes. I love how he explains how we are all unique and specifically made for God’s purpose.
I feel like I have already begun to implement some of what Warren has discussed in my life already. His words are encouraging and real when speaking about reflecting and then communicating your life lessons with others around us, believers and non-believers. I feel like I could do better in communicating, community, and serving others.
