The main concept of this book hooked me right away; I hadn't really thought about the purpose of the hyperspace lanes before, and this made me excited to learn more about them! While I found the conflict around their use to be engaging, I wasn't too endeared to many characters. Burryaga, Loden, and Bell were my three favorites personally. I found the pacing of the book to be engaging, and the framing of going around from one planet to another and how they each were dealing with the catastrophe to be really rewarding! The structure and depiction of the Nihil fell somewhat flat for me through my reading of them as a metaphor for anarchy; they felt rather stereotypical in that regard.

This book was much better than I was expecting it to be. It has some really awesome moments of well-written action, a surprisingly tight emotional core focused on unity and teamwork, and some very likable, if admittedly flat, characters.

There was plenty in this book that might be some of my favorite additions to Star Wars mythos yet. The Nihil and Marchion Ro are fascinating antagonists that I really want to know more about. While many of the Jedi characters felt flat, some of them like Avar and Elzar got a little more depth towards the end of the book and were still fun to read. It was also interesting to see the different ways which so many Jedi viewed the force, especially Avar. However, I do feel the cast was a bit crowded and we never got to spend a very satisfying amount of time with one character. I hope this changes in future books.

Overall, I look at this book in the same way I look at the movies, incredibly entertaining but if you're looking for something deeper you're in the wrong place.

it’s not that i didn’t like this book. it’s that it was so hard to read. it went all over the place. don’t get me wrong, i love any additions to the star wars universe. but this was painful to read for me. :(
