Started off strong, but there was really less world building across the stories than I was generally led to believe. Definitely some problematic content, as well, especially towards the end. Wouldn't recommend.

This should really be two books. The first 5 stories of cosmic horror are excellent, like if H.P. Lovecraft could write well. The last 5 are romantic short stories about students in Paris and I couldn’t get myself to finish them.

I wanted to read it so I would understand references to it. It’s an odd book. Not bad.

I read this book while waiting for my car to be finished at the mechanic’s. I figured it would be nice and short enough to read in a single sitting.
Honestly, the sounds of Large Horsepower Mechanisms making noises that I can only assume are Pain are not very conducive to reading books. But despite it, I kept reading.
A lot of books that all seem to be tied together with madness and the people that The King chooses to become his followers. Some of the stories had interesting concepts, I especially liked the one about the sculptor who turned living beings into statues!
But when I told some friends how unimpressed I ended up being with the book as a whole, they suggested that I read it aloud. It’s a hope of mine to find some friends who would be willing to take an afternoon and read out the stories in full, melodramatic, Magnus Archives Statement fashion. An update to this book review could be coming soon! o7
