Literally breathe-taking and beautiful. I also learned so much more about Chinese culture that I had 0 idea of. Overall a beautiful book!

What a beautiful, beautiful book. ❤️

“Over time, she realises that the more she learns about other’s stories, the less she needs to pinpoint her own. Like the final stages of assembling a jigsaw, at some point, she no longer needs the missing pieces to be able to imagine the whole.”

I, similar to Lily Dao, the great granddaughter of Dao Hongtse, grew up in a country foreign to their ancestors in safety, away from poverty, political unrest with plenty of opportunities and little to worry about. As a trade off we were kept in the dark about our heritage. Questions left unanswered, no matter how hard you begged your parents to tell you stories. Peach Blossom Spring is a story that eases the restless feeling of not knowing, appeases the need to pinpoint, and consoles the ache a little. I’d probably never fully understand and know all the details and that’s okay.

Peach Blossom Spring reminded me a lot of Pachinko in the sense that both tell a generational history following a strong woman trying to build a life during war, misfortunes, and hardship. “With every misfortune there is a blessing and within every blessing, the seeds of misfortune, and so it goes, until the end of time”. Both are great books, but probably due to my roots, I loved Peach Blossom Spring even more.

What I especially liked about Peach Blossom Spring were all the stories Meilin told and the life lessons they contained. So many of those were similar to the ones my father tried to pass on. I never truly realized how art, poems, and words were respected as a way to capture beauty to be passed on and to be expected to survive over time.

And since today it’s Mothers Day, I’m going to sit and cry a little bit. For finishing this book and for all the ancestors who came before us.
