I put this book at the top of my TBR pile after seeing Oppel and Klassen at AASL in Columbus, OH. (Also got an autographed copy). I'm sure that I will think about this book for some time to come, and I wonder which readers I will recommend this too. It is disturbing without being too much for middle grade students. When Oppel prefaced part of the session by explaining that his third child has Down Syndrome and that the book was 10-12 years in the making but only 6 weeks to write, I had a feeling about the perspective. It also made the book more meaningful to me.
Things would ask students: how old do you think Steve and Nicole are? Why do you think we did not know about Steve's OCD until much of the way into the book? The book reminded me quite a bit of David Almond's Skellig.

I picked this book for the cover, as there was no hints as to what the story was about on the back and I didn't see one on here. It's an incredibly fast read but it is spooky!! I didn't think this would be a weird messed up tale, but that's what it is. If you're not a fan of children hearing strange creepy voices, this is not the book for you.
A kid's book? I don't think so. Creepy. 3stars because it fails to reach its target audience. It's actually a pretty good book about acceptance if you don't try to picture a 10 year old reading it. It's one of those books for children that children probably won't like, but adults think they should. In parts it read like a fairy tale, not a disney version fairy tale, but an original disturbing fairy tale.
