I mentioned before that I attended the Voice of the Martyrs conference this year. One of the featured speakers was xxx, whose story is frightening and compelling. Much of the world has heard about her and her husband's capture by militants in the early 2000s. This book is a first-hand account of the horrors they went through and how xxx escaped.
Although I knew the ultimate outcome of the story because of her presentation, I felt myself hoping that somehow, the story would end differently than I knew. Of course, it didn't, but the journey along the way was compelling: from eating repulsive food, stealing clothes and necessities, not having glasses to see, to difficulties with menstruation, forced marriage, murders, and gun battles, this story was all the more horrifying because it is true. It left no details out, so the reader is able to fully experience the trial this couple faced.
In terms of Christianity, the book did a wonderful job explaining the tension between Islam and Christianity, xxx struggle with remaining faithful, and the way the faith community responded to their capture. There's a clear Gospel focus throughout the book, but I don't believe that it is preachy or excludes those who are not Christian. I don't think it's be difficult to read this book without believing the same things as the author.
I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy memoirs, non-fiction, thrillers, or Christian themes.

I'm not sure if this is a book to like or not. It is the story of the trials of Martin and Gracia Burnham who were taken as hostages in the Philippines. It was not the easiest book to read due to hearing of all of the atrocities that they faced. However, I am glad that I read the book.

Just finished this book at midnight and it brought me to tears many times. I remember this event in college and reading in more details the horror the Burnhams went thru for one year in the jungle captured by terrorists was incredible. Seeing how Grace dealt with this ordeal honestly encouraged my heart and showed me how GREAT my God still is even in the midst of suffering. Go read it now!
In the Presence of My Enemies is another life-changer. What Martin and Gracia endured is such a testimony to the power and grace of God. Gracia inspires me through her honesty, her failures and her steadfast faith in Jesus to bring her through to a victory that wasn't quite what she thought it would be. Spending a year as captives of Muslim terrorists from May 2001 to June 2002 they were tried and tested daily to doubt God and give up on forgiveness. But they didn't, and He bright them through this time with their integrity intact.
