Interesting plot, the story just dragged on a bit for me.
I loved this book! There were times when I felt that the story was getting slow or distracting, but then I remembered: the book is a story told through storytelling. Patience is a virtue throughout the book and reminding myself that as a reader made me feel more connected to Helena. Learning about the culture of the UP, learning about Helena’s experiences growing up so remotely, even as a Michigander myself, was very moving. She learned and grew through stories, as such, I as the reader began to appreciate the interludes and stories. I’m not sure if I’m completely satisfied with the ending, but it was good nonetheless!

This book wasn't at all what I was expecting. Initially I thought this was the second book in a series, but actually it is a stand alone novel and the story contains numerous flashbacks to the back story. While this is all very interesting it slows down the action through out the book and builds up to the ending, which is then quite flat.

Really compelling story but all of the characters are unlikeable. It’s often understandable given their circumstances but it’s hard for me to really like something when I hate the characters.
Absolutely amazing. But also devastating at the same time. The psychological torture. The awful things her father did. Holy crap. I just can’t even imagine and yet the author has been able to put you into Helena’s shoes and make it real. Wow.

Beautiful story of survival and growth. The narration was lovely. The writing evocative and compelling. The characters were complexed and nuanced. It was a slow paced book but tension filled.
