Read this after the movie trailer randomly showed up on my YouTube FYP. I enjoyed the beginning, but by the end I felt like I was just rushing to get to the end so I could finish it. The most interesting parts of the books are the flashbacks to the cabin. The present-day stuff is less intriguing.

A book with a lot of potential but not great execution. Really liked the parallel with the Hans Christian Andersen story, and the middle of the story focusing on building the characters of the family kept me very entertained. I think the relationships between Helena, her father, and her mother were very interesting, but I wish they more smoothly and gradually transformed in the flashbacks. The ending was a push to get through, I think because things culminated in a way that I didn't like.
Cousteau and Calipso coming back when she was an adult really pissed me off for some reason, and I didn't like that they spoke the HCA tale into the world of the story. The way that Helena hunted down her father just sort of fell flat for me, but it also highlighted something I really didn't like about the way Dionne wrote Helena. Perhaps it's because I'm from a similar area and did not need the explanations, but the constant mentions of her preferences for guns and knives didn't impress me. I think Dionne would have liked for me to be, but instead it just annoyed me. Helena annoyed me in general and I don't really think her decision made much sense, but that's honestly not aggrivating to me.
Ultimately, I don't think I liked the style, and I wish it had went a bit more into the psychology of it all.

Not into it

I loved reading about the UP while living in the UP, and I liked the story and the ending.

Oh my gosh, I listened to this book and definitely looked forward to each drive in the car so I could listen to more. A thriller read of the life of a child born out of a kidnapping situation and her life and escape. Highly recommend and cannot wait to watch the movie.

I watched the movie and it was a major flop.
