As a native Michigander very familiar with the UP and the locations in the book, I really wanted to like the story. Unfortunately, the main character was singularly minded, showed no internal growth from childhood to adulthood, and spoke about 20 words out loud the entire story. It's an interesting concept, but executed poorly with no mystery or tension between the main character and the protagonist.

I love a complex character, and Helena fits that bill.

When her father escapes from prison, Helena knows it's either hunt or be hunted, a skill she learned from her father during her childhood in a remote area of Michigan's UP.
The story is skillfully interwoven and the characters are deliciously unpredictable. Call me a fan!

This book was a fast read!! It makes you go through so many emotions. It explains so well about how the environment one grows up in shapes you as a whole person, but you can make a choice to change.
Probably would have liked this as a book and not an audio book.
