I can’t not rate this book 5 stars after putting in so much time and effort into reading it these past few months. definitely the sum cost fallacy but whatever.
this was described to me as dicken’s most mature novel and I can definitely see why. tl;dr on the plot is there are two families where son of one family and daughter of the other are love interests. the main plot revolves around the lives of these two families and a debtors prison. in real life, dicken’s father was in this same debtors prison so I was constantly psychoanalyzing him the whole book lol.
there aren’t any characters I particularly resonated with, but the characterization was great. each person was so fully formed from their dialogue to their actions it just felt so real.
random thoughts from my notes:
-dicken’s prefaces are so endearing. i wish authors still did them. so interesting to see how he views his work and his fame at the time it is being written
-the circumlocution office is truly one of the most ingenious satires I have ever read
-dickens writes about poverty so well
but can I really recommend a thousand page charles dickens novel to everyone? like most people don’t need to read this lol and you will probably be bored out of your mind.
if you are crazy enough to read this, definitely read the trigger warnings on this book and prepare for a JOURNEY.

Done at last! This book has been with me for four months, and, though I did not read frequently for the beginning part of it, it was delightful! The ending just made me smile. :)
I must say that this is the first time I have read something of length by Dickens. But oh, I wish I had done so sooner! His descriptions are delightful, and the characters are so real! (Especially Flora! Oh, I dreaded it whenever she rambled)
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a longer read, and may you enjoy it as much as I did!

I think I would have enjoyed this book even more if I hadn't watched the movie before I read this book for the first time but even so, I enjoyed this book.
Like all Dickens books I've read, I enjoyed the diverse cast of characters in all of their human failings and quirks as well as the story itself. I am not one of those Dickens haters that says his descriptions are overly long.
My only complaint, and a slight one at that, is how the main character, Little Dorrit, is an idealized one, a girl kept forever under glass pure and faultless. I probably liked her best of all but I wish she were a little bit more real.

Charles Dickens was able to create such memorable storylines which were enhanced by his memorable characters. Although Little Dorrit is not as well known as some of his more famous novels, it is not any less lovable and I think should be rated as highly as Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.
Also, for those of you who like to watch movie/tv renditions, BBC created a wonderful mini-series that is very enjoyable and close to the novel.

It took about 60% of the book to finally get interesting. Dickens has SO MANY characters. It's hard to keep track of everyone and I even kept looking back to the list of characters the book provided. It takes forever to set the scene and get to know the characters and set up the mystery, but once Dickens did this, I had a hard time putting the book down. I become so invested with Dickens characters because you spend so much time with them. When it's over it feels like you have left a beloved family.
I loathe this book. I love Dickens. I've read quite a few of his novels. This monstrosity is plodding, pointless, and irritating. Every character is obnoxious. The hero and heroine are saccharine and nerve rendingly irritating. Those who enjoyed it, more power to you. You must have caught something I didn't, because this is hands down the worst Dickens novel I've ever read. If I could give it negative stars, I would.
Such a complex plot! I was so happy when Clennam finally married Little Dorrit, and she was infinitely better off without all that money. I still don't understand who Arthur's real mother is or how Frederick Dorrit ties into it all, as I was under the impression that William was the one who ruined them. But very lovely! Would love to know how the house fell down, but I'm very glad that Blandois was in it! The whole deal with the Gowans and Miss Wade is still confusing as well...very wonderful book, though, with unexpected twists and characters.
