Markus Zusak is a GENIUS! He blows my mind. I love his writing style, his storylines, and he has the best narrators! This book was fantastic! I cannot wait to read any and everything else Zusak has to offer!

I often wish I had read a lot of the top YA books when I was a much younger adult. I Am the Messenger applies to this wish.

I loved this book so much, but the ending was not what I wanted. It was not satisfying. But I still would absolutely recommend it - the story itself is great, but the “plot twist” or explanation or whatever is not my favorite. But it was still beautiful <3

My favorite book!
I had picked I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak primarily because of the summary on the back of the book. It stood out from the rest of the summer reading choices, presenting a mysterious plot with a touch of suspense. Not only was the content interesting, but the cover art of the book itself reeled me in as well. The rushing of the bright yellow taxi and the passing lights gave me a good idea of how the book would be fast-paced yet full of detail that makes it the brilliant novel that it is.
I genuinely enjoyed reading this book; there were many factors that Zusak created that made me keep turning the pages and having no desire to put it down. It's a little difficult for me to pick what I liked the best! But I would have to say that I liked Zusak's style of writing the most out of anything. I Am the Messenger would not be the great book that it is if it were not for his delicate choice of words and his alluring, smooth way of conveying Ed's (the main character) thought process as he goes through the hardships someone has set up for him directly after stopping a bank robbery. Not many have the talent of having such descriptive and raw writing. What I liked the least was that the story had to end!
I would recommend this novel to people who love to immerse themselves in a quality story full of twist and turns with a sense of the unknown of what is coming next. It is not for people who cannot handle the reality of things such as the negative aspect of life in the slums of cities. There are vivid parts of the book that contain the pain that people go through, whether it be abandonment or rape. Overall, I Am the Messenger is a must read for teenagers and adults.
According to the post by Maja, "I think the most wonderful thing about Zusak is the surprising humanity of his characters." I completely agree with this thought. Zusak develops every single character so well, it is as if they are real people you know in your own life. For example, Zusak makes sure that the reader gets a true sense of who Ed is; for example, he is a young man who is not accepted by his family, seen as the black sheep out of his two siblings. The treatment he receives from his mother also supports the fact that it is so difficult for him to impress and satisfy his family. Many people can relate to this, and that appeals to the reader, making the book more interesting to read.
