Wow. This book. This book is beautiful. Wonderful. Marvelous.

I'm going to start out just talking about the main character, the narrator, Ed Kennedy. I absolutely adore a main character who's blunt but honest, is aware they're in a book, and narrates by stream-of-conscious thoughts. And Ed Kennedy does all of those things. I love how he's so up front with who he is. And even though he's not exactly okay with it, he accepts it and doesn't let it stop him. I love his voice. So. Much. Ed is probably the most dynamic character I've even had the privilege to read about. I truly feel like Ed is a much different person at the end of the book than he is at the beginning. And I absolutely adore him for that. He's definitely flawed and far from perfect, and I love that.

I have to talk a little bit about Ed's dog. First off, his name is The Doorman because he always sleeps right in front of the door. In the beginning of the book, I could barely even tell the Doorman wasn't human. The Doorman drinks coffee, eats dinner with Ed, and speaks through italics in Ed's thoughts. I love the Doorman. That's all I can really say about it. I just love the Doorman. :)

Now, I read Markus Zusak's The Book Thief awhile ago and loved the writing style, and I decided to read I am the Messenger for that very reason. Zusak did not disappoint in the least. This is one of those books where you can find your life motto in the pages. I love when a quote can be removed from a story and still have so much meaning. I found a ton of those kinds of quotes in this book, and I love them so much.

I took me awhile to get through I am the Messenger because I wouldn't exactly call it a page-turner. It was fairly easy to put down for a day or two (which is a lot for me), but the plot was still unique and intriguing. The writing style was fantastic. The characters were dense and complex. And I really did enjoy reading this book. :)

Once again, Markus Zusak, has written a funny and compelling novel set in Australia. I was a big fan of Getting the Girl and Fighting Ruben Wolfe and this book was just as entertaining as those two. The characters are realistic, flawed and well developed. The story wasn't completely original (it reminded me of the 90's TV show Early Edition, which I was a big fan of), but I liked how it developed and how the main character grew as a person as the story progressed.

I first read this book when I was 12-13 and again at 16-17. I think it was the first time I felt like I was truly looking into the life of an adult in their 20s. I tried reading it again at 21-22 and came to the realization that the main character is only 19. Are you kidding me. I still think it’s a great book - an interesting “mystery” plot that leads to the main character’s self discovery. I’ll try reading it again, but it felt like a 5/5 from the last time I read it.
