I struggled to keep track of all the characters & how they were related, but overall it was a fun read. I liked the mc and
really liked Crane, but at the same time I‘m glad their plot line didn’t take up too much space. They had their cute moments, but not in a flirting & secretly making out kind of way, more in a she’s passed out against his chest after narrowly escaping death kind of way or in a he’s the only one silently acknowledging her grief kind of way; it added to instead of distracting from the story. I hope their relationship will continue to be explored in the sequel.

The reveal was surprising but a little unbelievable. To a certain extent I expect that in a murder mystery, but a 17 yo killing a friend just bc she’s annoying & a bad friend to her other friend? (And then her son killing that other friend decades later bc she isn’t a good enough friend to his mother, his mother‘s secret might get out & everyone was just too obsessed with each other? Though that one was more believable in comparison)

A fun and intriguing murder mystery which I really enjoyed!

It's 1965, 16 year old Frances her her fortune told at a fair. The steps to her own murder crypticly predicted. She spends her whole life trying to work out who her killer will be. Until... She is actually murdered.
Annie is her estranged Great Niece, who finds herself in a race to find the killer of her Great Aunt. The prize at the end? France's inheritance...

I loved the premise of Annie having to unravel the mystery for the inheritance, and the wacky cast of characters reminded me much of knives out. As always with a good murder mystery, I loved to piece together the puzzle alongside the protagonist and air out my own theories in my head. I did suspect the perpetrator, but I didn't manage to piece everything together before our heroine did!

I also loved the mixed media style, with Frances's teenaged diary running alongside Annie's narrative. It allows the reader to get into her mindset as well, and to use the pieces Annie has to put together the jigsaw.

All in all, a great small-town murder mystery to sink your teeth into! If you like knives out and Agatha Christie, then pick up this one!
