this was fire. (no pun intended) loved the fairytales woven in to reveal some crucial parts- i think it’s creative. love how this is an easy read and just feels like you are being told a story. wished there was more johnny like some commentary stuff but i understand. these characters are so lovable and raw. the battle, especially with harris, to balance their rights and wrongs is fun to wager. uhg what a fun read.

✨️Book Review: Family of Liars by E. Lockhart✨️
Rating: 2.75⭐️
⚠️ SPOILERS for We Were Liars below
💸 In this sequel to We Were Liars, E. Lockhart explores the past stories of the Sinclair family - in all its rich, grand, messy, secretive history. If you like rich people drama, then this one's for you.
📖 The first book in this series was a bit of a let-down for me, yet I persevered and read the sequel as I couldn't resist the intoxicating pull of this mysterious family. Everyone is so eccentric and I just had to find out more about them.
👯♀️ This book definitely delivers on that front, as we go back in time to summers past, when the Sinclair sisters were teenagers. It was very eye-opening to see the moms from the first book as they were growing up and how they treated each other as sisters, how they were treated by their parents and the toxic environment they grew up in. You see a lot of their defining traits showing and taking shape in these formative years, and you do get some explanations for why they are like they are.
🤔 I once again found Tipper to be the most interesting person in this story and, while we do find out quite a bit about her history in this book, I wouldn't be opposed getting a story focused on her at some point. She is one layered character.
🏰 Where this book ultimately fell flat for me is in the way it repeats the same tropes as the first book, without building on them. We Were Liars wad told from the perspective of Cady, in her unique voice - poetic, fairytale obsessed, unreliable and haunted. In Family of Liars, Carrie narrates, but her voice is the same as Cady's. She never distinguishes herself as a truly original character standing on her own.
🎯 One other aspect I did not like is that the story lacked momentum and a clear direction. For most of the book, I was wondering where this story is headed and found myself rather bored with the mundane (albeit extravagant) occurings of the family. Perhaps it's a matter of managing expectations - if you don't go in expecting the puzzle and mystery of the first book, but rather just vibes and character studies, you might very well enjoy it.

it's actually embarrassing how long i've had this on my TBR. should've read it way earlier because it's actually really good, and you don't necessarily need to have read the first one to get a good backstory.
