The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God

I have been in the process of reading a whole bunch of Christian books on marriage and relationships while preparing a small group study. This has been the best BY FAR! Single, married, dating, widowed, divorced...just read it. Actually, I would especially encourage singles and dating to read it. Written by Timothy Keller and his wife (which alone puts it ahead of most of the competition), this one is solidly based on loads of scripture and research, as well as stories of personal experience and struggle. So so much humble wisdom! I will even buy this one to keep for my own book collection.
I am already planning on rereading this book within the next year. This resource helps believers like myself understand God’s view of what marriage should be and why He is right. The Kellers never shy away from hard questions in this book, and they take no part of the Christian view of marriage for granted. It is an amazing ground up understanding of how God perfectly architected a beautiful covenant relationship that reflects His own character.

I think this is great for both couples and singles. I really enjoyed the insight but I do wish there were more examples provided or they went more in depth with points they made. For me, it felt like they only scratched the surface with topics that could have had a deeper discussion. I did have a hard time finishing this because it read a bit studious with the plethora of footnotes and style of writing - I was hoping it would come off as more personable and relatable.
I also wish I had read this book the same time as Alex so that we could have talked through some of the points made. It’s definitely thought-provoking and I can see it resulting in meaningful conversations.
Thank you Hanna and Joe for this book!!❤️❤️

This book is pretty good. A standard review of a Gospel view of marriage. I was disappointed because for the most part it was nothing new, and it was pretty repetitive. I did think the last couple of chapters were quite good, though.

5 stars for tons of Biblical wisdom and practical advice.
-1 star because Timothy Keller often structures his chapters in windy and non-linear ways, which detracts from the reading experience. Keller is also prone to over-explain. The chapter written by Keller’s wife does not have these problems, she is concise and her points follow a clear, linear pattern. Another reason for the subtraction of a star is that Keller often says: “God’s view of ____ is ____.” But Keller doesn’t actually use any verses to support that what he said is actually God’s view—Keller will often just use this as a lead in to state his own opinion. For instance, Keller says “God’s view of marriage is that it is the deepest relationship possible between humans.” Is that God’s view? Where do you get that from the Bible? Why isn’t parent-child the deepest relationship? I have no idea, to my knowledge God doesn’t say that either of these relationships are the deepest possible. Keller loses a lot of credibility for many times saying that something is “God’s view” or the “Bible’s teaching” and then not substantiating that claim.
