Marquez's voice as narrator is resounding and timeless. His characters float back and forth through time and space, and reality gives and takes with and against their whims. The novel's intimate and fluid history of the Buendia family and the village Macondo is beautifully tragic, and ultimately a testament to a great author's ability to find the universal in the specific. The struggle for inner peace in a hostile world, the insurmountable odds of human decency against the onslaught of selfishness and greed, and the Sisyphean battle for sovereignty and identity.
