While this one took some effort to finish, I did end up enjoying it. There were times when I was sure my rating was 3 stars, but I was convinced to give it for because of the ending. I am excited for the next one, but I just hope this series can keep up with itself. 4/5 stars

I’m so glad that I didn’t let the Goodreads rating keep me from reading this. It’s been on my shelf for awhile and when I saw the rating on GR, I was a little wary. But I love Chloe Gong’s other books and I’m glad I listened to my instincts.
This is an amazing spin on Antony and Cleopatra. I will admit that getting into the world building was a little bit of struggle but once it clicked in my mind, I really enjoyed the story.
This is also a book for people that are looking for a chaotic FMC similar to a certain beloved FMC from Throne of Glass. Calla is the definition of jumping into something and hoping a plan falls into place. It doesn’t always work out for her but for the most part she is unscathed.
Unfortunately, she also has a partner in crime named Anton who tries to be a little more levelheaded…she never listens and usually it’s her plan that they go with.
Also, August. Yeah. I sometimes misjudge characters and I certainly did with this one but the build up to realizing the true nature of him was so well done.
I look forward to reading the next one!

... Not sure how I feel about this.

Ah…
This book was intense. And heavy. And did I mention intense?
I always felt a tiny bit anxious reading it.
Basically a grown up hunger games but more sci-fi and fantasy like.
Overall I took it slow cause of how intense it would get but man I feel like this book is gonna stay with me for a while. Not because it was amazing but because it was so WTF…there were parts I loved and enjoyed, and then there were parts where I lost my love for reading.
But, I liked that the romance wasn’t the main thing in this book and merely a small background character (and there were some good quotes).
That ending tho…guess I’ll read the next one lol

was this one of the best fantasy books I have read? ABSOLUTELY NOT! but am i obsessed? YESS

because Anton and Calla I just loved them and all these four stars are for them. because the world building and those unnecessary POVs I really didn't enjoy much but I loved their lil banter and enemies to lovers?? THAT ENDING??? THE WHOLE PLOT??? I have no words honestly I just want the second book
and considering this was my first Chloe gong's books im really in love
