I constantly forget that this was written by Chloe Gong and I mean that in the best way possible because this is her first adult fantasy (and my first adult fantasy as well) and it was definitely an interesting one, such a big difference from her ya fantasy series where in her ya series it’s more of a “linear” plot where you can kind of predict the outcome of the main characters. I definitely understand why some people might not like it but tbh I think I’m in too deep in the Chloe Gong universe to ever think she writes something bad. Excited to read the second book!

I really wanted to like this but I struggled to finish. Conceptually really cool, but dry af

The story follows 3 main characters: Princess Calla, Anton Makusa, and Prince August. 5 years ago, Princess Calla killed her parents and destroyed all the royalty to set the country of Er free. Now, she’s coming after King Kasa, who rules over the twin city of San. Prince August also wants to see King Kasa removed. Anton Makusa still visits the hospital for his friend that has been in a coma for 7 years. Princess Calla and Anton become participants in the games that the palace puts on. The games continue until there is only one winner. That winner gets to meet King Kasa. Princess Calla decides she needs to win the games so she can kill King Kasa, and Anton needs to win for the monetary prize, which can pay for hospital care for his friend. Prince August and Princess Calla forge a partnership to help her win, so she can take out King Kasa. However, Princess Calla meets Anton and has a love/hate relationship with this rival. They also form a strange partnership, although they never talk about what happens if they both end up at the end of the games, where only one person can win. I really liked the premise of this book. However, I think the execution lacked as far as pacing and world building. I had a hard time picturing the world and if it was current time, future time, or in the past. Also, I found the book hard to get into, then it was moving right along, but hit a bit of a slog towards the end. All in all an okay start to a series. I will likely pick up the next book just to see how if I like it better.
