4.5 going up to 5.

I definitely took quite a long time starting this book out. It's been a while since I've been thrown into such a deep worldbuilding series with so many mechanics to its magic. I really liked her concept in this book, and it was something that I've never seen before so thats chill. I also liked the subtle bits of Chinese language and culture incorporated into the text. The characters were great, mainly Calla and Anton. August was super annoying. I didn't really feel any connection to any of the sided characters, which was very different to her previous series. However, I REALLY liked the plot twists in this one. The second half of the book progressed really nicely, and the ending makes me just uGHHHH I NEED THE SECOND BOOK.

Might have been the audiobook, but I just didn’t identify with the characters and found the “jumping” to be confusing.

So this book was pretty slow starting and took me a while to get into the characters (and figure out who I did and didn’t like).

But once things got underway I found so many extra plot lines going on I was definitely intrigued and trying to guess who may be who (never correctly! Kept me on my toes)

Definitely intrigued to see where this series goes, hopefully the next book picks the tempo up from the second half of this book and not the slow start!

DID NOT FINISH: 52%

The world building is woe-fully underdevelooed, the character's are not only all underdeveloped and unrelatable, but all 3 main character's are rich nobility and the book is themed around a city drowning in poverty and Chloe Gong's portrayal of the latter is so clinical and superfluously described it's tone-deaf.

The plot is incredibly slow, uninteresting - despite it having all the pieces to be an outstanding read - and I couldn't being myself to care or to sto  watching the page numbers to see if I was nearly done yet.
