This is rare, a case where the book and the film are both brilliant. The only other case I know is with "Fight Club". Great characters, setting, plot...

Not a single person in this book is free of sin but for some reason almost all of them are lovable. Sonny was a cheater but his love for his sister was admirable. Michael married Appollonia even though he had Kay but his revenge was a treat to read. Hagen was involved in every crime known to man but his intelligence was deserving of respect. And most of all the Don himself. He had committed many crimes but for some reason each and every one of them was justified in some weird way.
As for the style, I fell in live with the writing style of Puzo. It is a perfect blend of classical and modern style i.e., easy yet pleasant to read. The way each character is introduced (even at the end) with a vivid description of their dress, the atmosphere, the scene... I love love love it.
Of course, this novel wasn't made to make people fall in love with the mafia but I think we can acknowledge the good some of them have done like the expiration dates on milk cartons started when a mafia boss' wife died of expired milk. He used his connections to make it compulsory. Idk why but this random article struck with me.
Anyways, all in all, I recommend this book.

I loved this book. I did see the movie series once many years ago and outside of one scene in particular I have no memory of the story. So i was truly able to approach reading the book fresh and untainted by the film. I found the book hard to put down and very interesting. The only negatives I have are the graphic sex scenes throughout and the characters Lucy Mancini and Jules Segal.
Puzo really made the characters shine with their own individual backstory, goals, and internal dialogue that was explored in great detail. Luca Brasi’s character had me clutching my pearls and gasping in horror. He was the most brutal character in my opinion. Now I must rewatch the series.

This took me an absurdly long time to finish. I got really stuck around the 1/3 mark and had to fight to keep going. It was really the Johnny Fontane plotline that gave me grief, it took me a while to see the value in that addition to the story. At any rate, I got there eventually and I am glad I stuck it out; there was some really excellent content towards the end. Pretty sure I won’t be reading any of the other books though.
I really enjoyed this book. I have tried to watch the movie in the past but could not get into it. Reading the book really kept my attention and I never wanted to put it down.
