Good reminder that self-help is a multi-billion dollar industry, and at times can be damaging (and expensive)
More like a 2.5.
Liked how it started and ended, but really slogged through the middle and found it hard to push through at times.

I quite enjoy a self help book occasionally so I was really intrigued to read this! I listened to the audiobook, read by Marianne herself, which was great.

I found this audio book difficult to listen to. I skipped several chapters. I thought it would be informative, and lighthearted but it was often depressing and sad. It definitely highlights the damage self help books can do when taken too literally or applied in the wrong mindset.
It's written with honesty and humour that reminded me at times of Bridget Jones’s Diary, but with more emotional depth and vulnerability. That said, I found parts of it quite triggering, especially as someone currently navigating anxiety and low mood. While the book is meant to explore the highs and lows of self-improvement, it often leans heavily into despair without enough resolution or relief.
This book might resonate with someone looking for a brutally honest account of trying to “fix” themself through self-help. But for those already feeling fragile, it may be worth approaching with caution.

Help Me! by Marianne Power is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-December.
The authoress herself, Marianne, is staving off anxiety, low motivation, and poor self-image, so she reads one common, yet classic self-help book per month for one year. These books tell her to embrace what she’s afraid of, wealth management, manifestation of what one desires, Manifestation: Extreme Edition, celestial protection, getting used to rejection, self-love, reducing stress, living in the moment, questioning one’s grievances, taking chances, and finding one’s ideal partner, yet not being of much help when she’s sick or depressed. While I was dissuaded from many of the books that Marianne read (but not from Marianne herself, since her plain-spoken and honest attitude had me cheering for her success), I see the most motivation (for me) to be had from The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

This is the more emotional version of Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project. Like Rubin, Marianne Power decides to try a different approach each month (in this case a different self-help book) but she takes a more introspective and emotional approach, and not everything proves to be a positive experience. As a British reader, I loved this book. It's wry, and funny, and sad and uplifting in equal measure and shines a light on some of the more enterprising members of the self help community. A good read to start the year with.
