This book felt very much like a first draft, or maybe even a diary entry, which has its time and place but I really wasn't a fan of it here--a lot of the language was distractingly unclear. The main messages of the book (our society is organized around family, and that leaves a lot of people with abusive family situations out; your upbringing determines how you form friendships and romantic relationships) were so basic yet reiterated ad nauseam, and rarely in a way that felt particularly fresh or insightful. I don't share the author's sense of humor, so maybe if you like her other work this would be a better book for you.

Reading through the one star reviews and the five star reviews of any book always makes me want to reread the book again to see what I missed or misread. Reviews are strange. Anyway, I finished the book and felt mostly fine about it. Her last essay was really touching, and throughout the book were gems of self-awareness and tiny pieces of advice for some readers. And the first essay too hit home on many points.

Oh, babe. I want nothing more than to find and consensually hug the author. Essentially raised by no one and having suffered more traumas than she can count, she bares her soul to the reader in ways that are honest, searing and comical. A tricky balance but one that her voice can manage.
