The cover first caught my eye, but it was the Icelandic setting that truly sold me. There’s something about a wintry, isolated atmosphere that’s both chilling and breathtaking when done right. And in this case, it absolutely was. This book was beautifully written and surprisingly addictive. I couldn’t put it down—not because it was action-packed or overly thrilling, but because the suspense and emotional depth quietly pulled me in. I felt deeply connected to the main character, especially her pain journey. As someone who’s lived with chronic pain since I was 12, her struggles hit close to home. If you're looking for a lighter take on Nordic noir, this is an excellent pick. The setting is stark and haunting, the themes get dark, and while the pacing slows at times, the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very last chapter. A truly atmospheric and memorable read.

This story is of a girl named Agnes who travels to Iceland to visit where her grandfather and father grew up and were forced to leave before she was born as her grandfather was accused of murdering his wife and child. While Agnes strongly believed in her grandfather’s innocence, all signs seem to point to him. While she is there, a woman named Asa disappears and is feared dead, and Agnes through it all, Agnes dealing with her own demons.

This book really grew on me. The not-so-great was that I thought it took a while to get going - with a heavy focus on Agnes’ injured leg and her reliance on pills. I got sick of hearing about it and almost gave up on the book. BUT, once things got going, this part of the story line did matter, and was worked through in wonderful ways.

Generally, the writing was really interesting and thoughtful, and the multiple mysteries kept things really interesting. The end twists were impressive, and a last fight against The Bad Guy was perfectly detailed instead of being glossed over like so many are. Very much recommended.
